TWENTY-FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

RETREAT CENTER

GOES TO THE PARISH

For the week of October 21 (Sunday) through October 27 (Saturday), a Directed Retreat opportunity is coming to St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish thanks to the Cenacle Retreat Center. Save those dates!

What is a Directed Retreat? It is a way of making a retreat in the midst of daily living. It is a simple structure which works. Participants are asked to devote one-half hour a day for scripture and prayer and then will be asked to meet with their Director at the Cenacle for about a one-half hour of direction and guidance. Times will be worked around the participant’s schedule. On the beginning day (Sunday) and the concluding day (Saturday), there will be a large group session. Registration information will be forthcoming.

Keep watching the bulletin so you don’t miss out!

WHAT IT MEANS TO BE CATHOLIC!

Can you come up with your top 10 reasons for being Catholic? If you can, why not be a special messenger for God and bring the Good News to those who might want to be a Catholic. We all know someone who did not complete all their Sacraments or might be missing Confirmation. All it takes is a kind word to encourage them to "come and see" what it is all about. See the flyer about how adults enter the Church enclosed in this bulletin today.

Any questions, please call Michele Hahn at 737-4388.

19th Annual Mass for Deceased Children, St. Agnes Cathedral, Rockville Centre, Saturday, September 15, 11:30 am celebrated by Rev. William Koenig. Come early to inscribe child’s name in the "Book of Families." All are welcome. Refreshments following in the Parish Center. For information call 516-764-0681.

As always, we will do our best to accommodate requests according to remaining availability in classes.

FOR THE RIDE HOME

First Reading: Isaiah 66:18-21

Second Reading: Hebrews 12:5-7

Gospel Luke 13:22-30

What church practices help you grow closer to God? Which hinder that growth? Why do you think some help and some don't?

What religious practice will you use this week to come closer to God? How will this practice open your heart and sharpen your mind to see God in your life?

RCIA . . . WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT?

It is the process of how adults become Catholic or complete their reception of the Sacraments. Unlike the children’s program, there are no set time frames nor grade levels. Adults move along at their own pace and where their spiritual life leads them.

It begins with a telephone call to the Parish Office asking what it is all about. A meeting is arranged with a member of the RCIA team to give a brief overview. If the interviewee wishes, he/she begins to meet here on Monday evenings at 7:30 PM.

This first step is called the Inquiry stage. There is no time limit on how long or short a time a person must remain in this stage. What happens? A little bit about the Church is discussed, questions are answered and explored. At a particular time, a person may be asked if they are willing to move on to the next stage through the Rite of Acceptance/Welcome. This ritual takes place in Church at a Mass and is the first time the inquirer is stating publicly his/her desire to study further. This second stage is called the Catechumenate (Candidacy, if the person is already baptized). There is no specific time limit for this stage. It can last at least one year.

Reception of the Sacraments would take place at the Easter Vigil Liturgy on Holy Saturday.

LIVING GOD’S CALL FOR CHARITY AND JUSTICE IN POLITICAL LIFE
Our Charity: Creating a “Heart that Sees”

Christian charitable activity must be independent of parties and ideologies. It is not a means of changing the world ideologically, but it is a way of making present here and now the love which man always needs. . . . We contribute to a better world only by personally dong good now, with full commitment and wherever we have the opportunity, independently of partisan strategies and programs. The Christian’s program - the program of the Good Samaritan, the program of Jesus - is a “heart which sees.” This heart sees where love is needed and acts accordingly. Charity, furthermore, cannot be used as a means of engaging in what is nowadays considered proselytism (converting others to the faith). Love is free; it is not practiced as a way of achieving other ends. . . . Those who practice charity in the Church’s name will never seek to impose the Church’s faith upon others. They realize that a pure and generous love is the best witness to the God in whom we believe and by whom we are driven to love. A Christian knows when it is time to speak of God and when it is better to say nothing and to let love alone speak. He knows that God is love and that God’s presence is felt at the very time when the only thing we do is to love. . . .

The First Encyclical of Pope Benedict XVI

LIVING GOD’S CALL FOR CHARITY AND JUSTICE IN POLITICAL LIFE

We have seen that the formation of just structures is not directly the duty of the Church, but belongs to the world of politics, the sphere of the autonomous use of reason. The Church has an indirect duty here, in that she is called to contribute to the purification of reason and to the reawakening of those moral forces without which just structures are neither established nor prove effective in the long run. The direct duty to work for a just ordering of society, on the other hand, is proper to the lay faithful. As citizens of the State, they are called to take part in public life in a personal capacity. So they cannot relinquish their participation “in the may different economic, social, legislative, administrative and cultural areas, which are intended to promote organically and institutionally the common good. . . . Charity must animate the entire lives of the lay faithful and therefore also their political activity, lived as “social charity.”

The First Encyclical of Pope Benedict XVI

What is new about the Rosary?

Pope John Paul II had declared October 2002 - October 2003 the "Year of the Rosary". At that time he has asked everyone to recite the Rosary frequently, lovingly and with the knowledge that its prayers link them with Mary and lead them to Jesus.  To expand the Rosary’s references to Gospel events and underline the depth of its connection to Christ, the Pope has asked people to add five “mysteries of light” to the other Rosary mysteries.  The five new mysteries of light are:

Christ’s baptism in the Jordan.
His self-manifestation at the wedding feast of Cana.
His proclamation of the kingdom of God with his call to conversion.
His transfiguration.
His institution of the Eucharist.

The Pope also suggested how the new mysteries could be included by people who follow the practice of reciting one set of mysteries each day of the week.

Joyful Mysteries on Monday and Saturdays
Sorrowful Mysteries on Tuesdays and Fridays
Glorious Mysteries on Wednesdays and Sundays
Mysteries of Light on Thursdays

The addition is meant to give the Rosary fresh life and to enkindle renewed interest in the rosary’s place within Christianity.
